Visual Design and Communication
Visual design and communication is the practice of using images, type, colour, and layout to convey meaning, persuade audiences, and build visual identities. It is a discipline that underpins the whole of the communications industry, from graphic design and branding to digital media, advertising, illustration, and user interface design. Studying it means developing both the aesthetic sensibility to produce considered and purposeful visual work and the conceptual thinking to understand why certain design choices communicate effectively and others do not.
At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year full-time programme provides a thorough foundation in visual design principles and their application across a range of media and contexts. You will develop skills in typography, image-making, layout, and digital design, alongside the critical and contextual knowledge to understand visual communication as a cultural and professional practice. UHI's distributed campus structure means you can access this programme across different locations in the Highlands and Islands, making it available to students in a region where travel to a major city for art and design education would be a significant barrier.
The programme develops creative and technical competence alongside analytical and professional skills, preparing you for work in a design industry that is constantly evolving as new digital platforms and technologies reshape how visual communication is produced and consumed.
Graduates move into careers in graphic design, branding, digital design, advertising, publishing, web and app design, social media content creation, and related creative roles. Some work in illustration, animation, or user experience design. Others move into education, arts administration, or community arts, while some establish independent practices or freelance careers.
Postgraduate study in design, visual communication, or related disciplines is also an option for graduates who want to develop their specialism further.
