Welsh as a second language is a distinctive pathway for students who have learned Welsh through education or community contact rather than as a home language, allowing them to develop their skills in the language, literature, and culture of Wales from a starting point of acquired rather than native competence. Welsh is a living language with a unique position in contemporary Britain: it is spoken by over half a million people, is co-official in Wales, and is growing in the number of learners and new speakers who are choosing to engage with it as adults and young people. This pathway recognises and builds on that choice.

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time programme takes an innovative approach to Welsh, exploring the language, literature, and culture of Wales while also looking outward to global connections and multiculturalism. You will examine what it means to speak, write, and live through the medium of Welsh in the twenty-first century, engaging with literature from across the Welsh-language tradition alongside contemporary debates about the role of the language in Welsh society. The programme is designed to develop second-language learners into fully competent and confident users of Welsh in academic, professional, and cultural contexts, building on the linguistic foundation you already have.

Graduates of this pathway go on to careers in education (where Welsh-medium teaching is in growing demand), broadcasting, journalism, translation, public administration, the arts, and the many organisations in Wales for which Welsh language skills are valued and sometimes required. Welsh-medium education at all levels offers particularly strong employment prospects, and Welsh-language skills are increasingly valued across the public, cultural, and voluntary sectors in Wales. Postgraduate study in Welsh, Welsh literature, or linguistics is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise for academic or specialist professional roles.
