Woodland Ecology and Conservation

Woodlands are among the most complex and valuable ecosystems in the British landscape. They support an extraordinary diversity of species, regulate water cycles, store carbon, and provide the materials and spaces on which both people and wildlife depend. Woodland ecology and conservation is the discipline that seeks to understand how these systems function and how they can be managed sustainably in the face of mounting pressures from climate change, invasive species, disease, and habitat fragmentation.

It draws on ecology, biology, environmental science, and practical land management to develop the knowledge and skills that working foresters and conservationists need.

At the University of Cumbria's Ambleside campus, this three-year full-time programme is taught within the National School of Forestry, in a setting surrounded by the forests and fells of the Lake District. You will study forest ecology, biodiversity, tree biology, woodland management, and conservation science, developing both theoretical understanding and practical fieldwork skills. The campus places you within reach of some of the most important woodland habitats in England, and field-based learning is central to the programme.

You will learn to survey and monitor woodland species and habitats, evaluate management options, and apply conservation principles in real landscape settings.

Graduates are prepared for careers as woodland managers, conservation officers, ecological surveyors, forest rangers, arboricultural consultants, and environmental advisers. Many work for organisations such as the Forestry Commission, Natural England, the Woodland Trust, National Parks, wildlife trusts, and private forestry companies. The degree is also a strong foundation for postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental management, or arboriculture.
