Youth Work and Communities

Youth work and communities is a practice-based discipline concerned with supporting the development, wellbeing, and participation of young people, particularly those who are marginalised or at risk. Youth workers engage with young people in informal and community settings, from youth clubs and street-based outreach to schools, prisons, and online spaces, building relationships based on trust and voluntary participation. The discipline draws on social pedagogy, community development, social work theory, and youth studies to inform practice, and it takes seriously the political and ethical dimensions of working with young people in a society that often fails them.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme combines theoretical study of youth and community development with substantial practice learning in real organisations. You will engage with theories of adolescent development, social inequality, community organising, and the policy context that shapes youth services in the UK. The practice element is central: you will spend significant time working with young people and communities, developing the relational and facilitative skills that youth work requires and reflecting critically on your practice in the light of the theory you are learning.

Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in Europe by population, with a large and diverse community of young people and a well-developed youth and community sector. This gives the programme a rich practical context and extensive opportunities for placement learning in a wide range of settings, from statutory youth services to voluntary organisations and faith communities.

Graduates of youth work and communities programmes work in local authority youth services, voluntary organisations, schools, probation, the criminal justice system, housing and homelessness services, and community development roles. Many become registered youth workers through the National Youth Agency's endorsement process, and the degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in social work, community development, or education.
