About this course

Zoology is the scientific study of animal life in all its extraordinary diversity: from the molecular mechanisms that govern cell behaviour to the ecological relationships that structure entire ecosystems. It is one of the broadest of the biological sciences, drawing on genetics, evolution, physiology, behaviour, and ecology to understand how animals function, how they have diversified over billions of years, and how they interact with each other and with their environments. In a period of rapid biodiversity loss and ecological change, the knowledge zoologists contribute is more valuable than ever.

At Aberystwyth University, the BSc Zoology degree develops a solid foundation in transferable scientific skills alongside deep engagement with animal biology. Aberystwyth's location on the west coast of Wales offers direct access to a range of habitats, from upland moorland to estuarine and coastal environments, making fieldwork both accessible and genuinely varied. You will study animal diversity, physiology, behaviour, ecology, and evolution, developing practical skills in observation, data collection, laboratory analysis, and statistical interpretation.

Field and laboratory components are central to the degree, building the empirical habits of mind that characterise working scientists. You will also engage with contemporary conservation biology, learning to apply zoological knowledge to real-world problems of species and habitat management.

You will develop the ability to design and conduct investigations, to evaluate evidence critically, and to communicate scientific findings to both specialist and general audiences. The research skills you build are broadly applicable and valued in many sectors beyond the life sciences themselves.

Graduates from zoology degrees pursue careers in conservation, ecology, environmental consultancy, wildlife management, zoos and aquaria, government environmental agencies, science communication, and academic research. Many graduates also find that a zoology degree provides strong preparation for postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, parasitology, veterinary science, or related fields, for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or an independent research career.

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” t…

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy t…
