Zoology
Zoology is the branch of biology concerned with the scientific study of animals in all their diversity, examining how they are built, how they function, how they behave, how they evolved and how they interact with each other and with the environments they inhabit. It is a discipline that ranges from the molecular mechanisms of cellular biology through the physiology of individual organisms to the ecology of populations and ecosystems, using observation, experimentation and quantitative analysis to build knowledge of the animal kingdom. As biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation accelerate, the skills of zoologists are increasingly needed across conservation, research and policy.
At Roehampton University this three-year, full-time programme equips you with the knowledge, skills and professional experience needed to address some of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. You will develop grounding in vertebrate and invertebrate biology, evolutionary theory, physiology, ecology and animal behaviour, alongside the practical and quantitative skills that allow you to collect, analyse and interpret zoological data in field and laboratory settings. The programme includes a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before the main degree content, as well as a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in conservation, ecological research or related settings before graduation.
Graduates of zoology programmes pursue careers in conservation biology, ecological consultancy, wildlife management, zoological gardens and aquaria, veterinary support roles, environmental impact assessment, government nature agencies, international NGOs, scientific research and science education. The fieldwork skills, data literacy and scientific rigour the degree develops also translate well into roles in environmental monitoring, biodiversity net gain assessment and sustainability consulting. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in zoology, ecology, conservation science or related biological sciences.
