Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals: their biology, behaviour, evolution, ecology, and physiology. It asks how the extraordinary diversity of animal life on Earth has come about, how different species are related to one another, and how animals interact with the environments they inhabit. In an era of accelerating biodiversity loss and climate change, the discipline has a particular urgency, providing the scientific foundation for conservation efforts and for understanding how animal populations respond to a changing world.

At the University of Manchester, you will study zoology over four years full-time, beginning with a foundation year that builds your biological knowledge and scientific skills before you move into the full degree. The foundation year makes the programme accessible to students who are motivated to study zoology at a leading research university but may benefit from additional preparation before engaging with the full degree. The main programme covers the behaviour, physiology, conservation, ecology, and evolution of animals, using a wide range of approaches including genetic techniques, field observation, quantitative analysis, and comparative anatomy.

You will develop both laboratory and fieldwork skills, and Manchester's research strengths in evolutionary biology, ecology, and conservation provide a stimulating intellectual environment for your studies. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points.

Zoology graduates pursue a wide range of careers. Conservation biology, wildlife management, animal behaviour research, ecological consultancy, and fieldwork for environmental organisations are all common paths. Others work in education, science communication, public health, and veterinary or medical research support.

Many go on to postgraduate study at MSc or PhD level, specialising in areas such as ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation genetics, or animal behaviour.
