Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals, encompassing their biology, behaviour, ecology, evolution, and physiology, from the molecular mechanisms that sustain individual cells to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. It is a discipline driven by curiosity about the astonishing diversity of animal life on Earth, and increasingly shaped by urgent practical questions about conservation, biodiversity loss, wildlife management, and the effects of climate change on animal populations. Studying zoology means developing both deep knowledge of living systems and the scientific skills to investigate them rigorously.

At the University of Chester, you will study Zoology over three years, full time, with a year abroad included in the programme. The year abroad offers the opportunity to experience different ecological environments, field research settings, and academic traditions, and can be formative for students intending to work in conservation or field ecology internationally. You will develop knowledge across animal biology, including evolution and systematics, animal behaviour and ecology, physiology, genetics, and conservation biology.

Field skills are central to zoological study, and the programme will give you experience of identifying and surveying species, collecting and analysing ecological data, and working in natural environments. Alongside field and laboratory work, you will develop strong quantitative and statistical skills for analysing biological data, and engage with the ethical questions that arise in research involving animals.

Zoology graduates pursue careers in wildlife conservation, environmental consultancy, field ecology, animal management, research, education, and science communication. The scientific rigour and field experience the degree provides are valued by conservation organisations, national parks, environmental agencies, zoos, and ecological research groups. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in conservation biology, ecology, zoology, wildlife management, and environmental science, as well as research doctorates for those wishing to pursue academic or research careers.
