Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals, encompassing their anatomy, physiology, behaviour, ecology, evolution and the extraordinary diversity of animal life on Earth. From the molecular mechanisms that govern development to the population dynamics of species in complex ecosystems, zoology spans an enormous range of scales and approaches. It is a discipline driven by curiosity about the natural world, but one with increasingly urgent practical implications given the pace of biodiversity loss and environmental change.

Nottingham Trent University offers this programme with a foundation year, making it accessible to students who would benefit from additional grounding in the biological sciences and academic study before the main degree content begins. The foundation year builds the scientific knowledge, laboratory skills and study habits that the full degree requires, and from there you move into three years of zoology content covering core animal biology alongside more specialist topics in ecology, conservation, animal behaviour, evolutionary biology and the tools and techniques of modern biological research. Nottingham Trent has strong applied and field-based traditions in its biological sciences provision, and you will develop practical skills in fieldwork and laboratory investigation as well as theoretical knowledge.

Zoology trains careful observation, the ability to design and conduct rigorous investigations, skill in quantitative analysis and interpretation, and the capacity to communicate scientific findings effectively. Field-based experience in particular develops adaptability and problem-solving under real conditions.

Graduates work in conservation organisations, wildlife management, environmental consultancy, zoological collections and aquaria, ecological surveying, education, science communication and government environmental agencies. Many go on to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, animal behaviour or related biological sciences, and doctoral research is the route for those wishing to pursue academic or senior research careers.
