Zoology With Herpetology

Zoology with herpetology is a degree that combines the broad scientific study of animals with a specific focus on reptiles and amphibians, two of the most ecologically important and scientifically fascinating groups of vertebrates. Herpetology, the scientific study of these animals, covers their biology, behaviour, ecology, evolution and conservation. Reptiles and amphibians are important indicators of ecosystem health and are disproportionately threatened by habitat loss, climate change, disease and invasive species, making expertise in their study and conservation increasingly urgent.

At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The foundation year provides the scientific grounding needed before progressing to the full degree. The sandwich and placement elements give you direct professional experience in zoological, conservation or herpetological research settings, which might include work with zoos, conservation charities, government agencies or field research projects.

The year abroad offers the opportunity to work with species and ecosystems you would not encounter in the UK, which for herpetologists in particular opens access to the far greater diversity of reptiles and amphibians found in tropical and subtropical regions.

You will study animal biology, ecology, behaviour, evolution and conservation alongside the specific biology and ecology of reptiles and amphibians. Field skills, laboratory techniques and data analysis are developed throughout, and you will carry out independent research as part of your degree.

Graduates pursue careers in conservation, wildlife management, herpetological research, ecological consultancy, zoo and aquarium work, wildlife education and policy. Some go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in herpetology, conservation biology or ecology. The combination of broad zoological training and specialist herpetological knowledge is valued by conservation organisations and research institutions working with these groups.
