Zoology

Zoology is the systematic scientific study of animals across all their forms, from the molecular processes within cells to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. It encompasses animal physiology, behaviour, genetics, ecology, evolution and conservation, using a combination of field research, laboratory investigation and quantitative analysis to build understanding of the animal kingdom and humanity's relationship to it. At a time of accelerating biodiversity loss and climate disruption, the scientific skills of zoologists have never been more urgently needed.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year programme develops a solid foundation of transferable scientific skills recognised by Royal Society of Biology accreditation. The extended duration reflects the depth of training, with the final year typically including independent research at a level that connects you to the university's research activity. You will study animal diversity and evolution, cell and molecular biology, ecology, animal physiology, behaviour and conservation science.

Field courses and practical work are integrated throughout, giving you hands-on experience in natural environments, including the varied and relatively unspoiled habitats of mid-Wales and beyond.

You will develop skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing and the use of statistical and computational tools. The ability to collect and interpret evidence in the field as well as the laboratory is central to what zoologists do, and the programme gives you practice in both. Critical thinking, quantitative literacy and the ability to communicate findings clearly are developed alongside technical competence.

Graduates pursue careers in ecology and environmental consultancy, conservation management, wildlife research, animal welfare, zoo and aquarium work, veterinary science and related fields. Many go on to postgraduate study, including doctoral research, in ecology, evolutionary biology, zoology or conservation biology. The scientific skills developed in the programme are also valued in environmental policy, public health and education.
