Classical Studies and English

Classical studies and English is a combination that bridges two of the most intellectually rich traditions of textual study available at undergraduate level. Classical studies engages with the Greek and Roman worlds in all their complexity, from the literary masterpieces of Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, and Tacitus to the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, the social history of ancient Athens and Rome, the art and architecture of antiquity, and the extraordinary afterlife of the classical tradition in the modern world. English literature develops the close-reading and critical thinking skills needed to engage with writing in the full range of forms and periods, from the Old English tradition to contemporary fiction and poetry.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme is taught at one of Scotland's most distinguished research universities. You will develop your ability to analyse Greek and Roman texts across genres and in translation, to engage with the social and cultural history of the ancient world, and to trace the ways in which classical culture has shaped and been transformed by later traditions. The English component gives you access to a wide range of literary periods and critical approaches.
