About this course

Archaeology and forensic biology is a combination that brings together two sciences concerned with uncovering evidence of the past and interpreting it rigorously. Archaeology examines material remains to reconstruct human history and prehistory, from ancient settlements and artefacts to burial sites and environmental evidence. Forensic biology applies biological science to legal contexts, from crime scene investigation to the identification of human remains and the analysis of biological evidence.

Together they develop complementary skills in evidence recovery, scientific analysis, and critical interpretation.

At the University of Chester, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you experience of working in a different research or academic context and the opportunity to encounter different archaeological and forensic traditions. You will study archaeological excavation and survey methods, osteoarchaeology, environmental archaeology, and the analysis of biological material, including DNA, bone, and tissue, in both archaeological and forensic contexts. Chester's location in a region with rich archaeological heritage gives students access to fieldwork opportunities that bring the subject to life.

Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in archaeology, heritage, museum and conservation work, crime scene investigation, forensic science services, coroner's offices, and disaster victim identification.
