Graphic design is the practice of visual communication: creating meaning through the deliberate arrangement of type, image, colour, and form. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides a thorough grounding in both the theory and practice of graphic design before you move into the main degree curriculum. In the foundation year, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of the discipline, building technical skills and conceptual understanding alongside your creative confidence. Across the full programme, you will develop your abilities across print, digital, motion, and environmental design, building a portfolio that demonstrates your range and your developing professional voice.

The foundation year route makes the programme accessible to students who have creative potential and passion but benefit from a more gradual introduction to degree-level design study.

Graphic design graduates work in agencies, studios, publishing houses, in-house design teams, and as freelance practitioners. Typical roles include graphic designer, art director, brand designer, editorial designer, motion designer, and digital product designer. The critical and visual thinking the degree develops is also relevant in adjacent fields including illustration, photography, UX design, and content creation.

Many graduates build diverse portfolios spanning several of these areas, while others choose to specialise. Postgraduate study in graphic design, design research, or related creative disciplines is an option for those who want to develop further.
