Liberal arts with French is a degree built on the premise that the most significant questions cannot be contained within a single discipline. Liberal arts programmes draw on the breadth of the humanities, asking you to move between history, literature, philosophy, cultural studies, and other fields, and providing core modules that help you make connections across them and develop a genuinely integrated intellectual perspective. French adds linguistic and cultural depth, giving you proficiency in a major global language and serious engagement with Francophone literature, thought, film, and culture.

At York this four-year full-time programme takes advantage of a university with a rich tradition of interdisciplinary study. You will choose from option modules across the arts and humanities, and may also be able to explore modules in the sciences and social sciences, with core liberal arts modules helping you connect your learning and explore the humanities more broadly. French is developed to a high level of written and spoken proficiency alongside cultural study.

A sandwich year and work placement experience are built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to develop professional skills in a real working environment before you graduate.

The degree is designed for students who resist narrow specialisation and want to cultivate a broad intellectual formation alongside genuine linguistic skill. The combination of analytical range, cultural knowledge, and French fluency is a distinctive and highly transferable qualification.
