About this course

Mechanical engineering applies the principles of physics, mathematics, and materials science to the design, development, and operation of physical systems. It is one of the broadest engineering disciplines, relevant to everything from the production of microchips and precision instruments to the design of jet engines, wind turbines, and manufacturing processes. Mechanical engineers combine analytical and practical capabilities, designing solutions that work within physical and economic constraints and contributing to the development of technologies that address some of the most pressing challenges facing industry and society.

At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, which builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for degree-level engineering study and is particularly well suited to students who come to engineering with strong motivation but without traditional A-level routes. A placement or work experience year is also built into the programme, and a year abroad is available, giving you both professional experience and international perspective.
