Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Conservator
As a Junior Conservator, you will assist senior conservators in the preservation and restoration of artefacts. Your role will involve basic conservation tasks, documentation, and learning advanced techniques under supervision.
Mid-Level Conservator
In this role, you will take on more complex conservation projects, develop your own conservation plans, and may supervise junior staff. You will also be responsible for liaising with stakeholders and presenting your work.
Senior Conservator
As a Senior Conservator, you will lead conservation projects, mentor junior staff, and represent your institution in professional forums. Your expertise will guide the strategic direction of conservation efforts.
