Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior DevOps Engineer
As a Junior DevOps Engineer, you will assist in the automation of deployment processes and support senior engineers in maintaining system performance. This role is ideal for recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative environment.
Mid-level DevOps Engineer
In a mid-level position, you will take on more responsibility, leading projects and mentoring junior team members. You will be expected to design and implement complex CI/CD pipelines and optimise cloud infrastructure.
Senior DevOps Engineer / Head of DevOps
At the peak of your career, you will oversee the entire DevOps function, driving strategic initiatives and ensuring alignment with business goals. You will lead a team of engineers and be responsible for the overall performance and security of the software delivery process.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for devops engineers.
