Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Electrical Engineer
In this entry-level role, you will assist senior engineers in designing and testing electrical systems, gaining hands-on experience and developing your technical skills.
Mid-level Electrical Engineer
As a mid-level engineer, you will take on more complex projects, lead small teams, and have a greater responsibility for project outcomes and client interactions.
Senior Electrical Engineer/Head of Engineering
At this peak career stage, you will oversee major projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to strategic planning and innovation within your organisation.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for electrical engineers.
