Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Environmental Lawyer
As a junior environmental lawyer, you will assist senior lawyers in legal research, drafting documents, and preparing for cases. You will gain exposure to various aspects of environmental law and begin to build your expertise.
Mid-level Environmental Lawyer
In a mid-level role, you will manage your own cases, advise clients independently, and represent them in negotiations. You will also mentor junior lawyers and contribute to strategic planning.
Senior Environmental Lawyer/Head of Environmental Law
At the peak of your career, you will lead a team of lawyers, oversee complex cases, and shape environmental policy at a strategic level. You will be recognised as an expert in the field and may engage in public speaking and advocacy.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for environmental lawyers.
