Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Ethnographer
In this entry-level role, you will assist senior ethnographers in conducting fieldwork and data collection, gaining hands-on experience in qualitative research methods.
Mid-level Ethnographer
As a mid-level ethnographer, you will lead your own research projects, manage fieldwork teams, and present findings to clients or stakeholders.
Senior Ethnographer/Research Lead
In this peak career role, you will oversee large-scale research initiatives, mentor junior researchers, and influence policy and practice at a strategic level.
