Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Game Designer
As a Junior Game Designer, you will assist in the development of game concepts and mechanics, working closely with senior designers to learn the ropes of the industry.
Mid-level Game Designer
In a mid-level role, you will take on more responsibility, leading design projects and mentoring junior designers while refining your own skills.
Senior Game Designer/Lead Designer
At the peak of your career, you will oversee entire game projects, making high-level design decisions and guiding the creative vision of the team.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for game designers.
