Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Illustrator
As a Junior Illustrator, you will assist in creating illustrations under the guidance of senior artists, gaining valuable experience in client communication and project management.
Mid-level Illustrator
In a mid-level role, you will take on more complex projects, work independently, and begin to establish your own style and client base.
Senior Illustrator/Art Director
At this peak career stage, you will lead projects, mentor junior illustrators, and have a significant influence on creative direction within your organisation.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for illustrators.
