Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Media Planner
In this entry-level role, you will assist senior planners in researching media options and compiling reports on campaign performance. This position is ideal for recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in media planning.
Mid-level Media Planner
At this stage, you will take on more responsibility, leading client meetings and developing comprehensive media strategies. Your experience will allow you to negotiate effectively with media vendors and analyse campaign data to drive results.
Senior Media Planner/Head of Media
In a senior role, you will oversee a team of planners, manage large-scale campaigns, and develop strategic partnerships with clients. Your expertise will guide the agency's media strategy and influence the direction of major advertising initiatives.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for media planners.
