Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior Network Engineer
In this entry-level role, you will assist in the setup and maintenance of network systems, gaining hands-on experience while learning from senior engineers.
Mid-level Network Engineer
As a mid-level engineer, you will take on more complex projects, lead troubleshooting efforts, and mentor junior staff.
Senior Network Engineer/Network Architect
In this peak role, you will design large-scale network solutions, oversee major projects, and contribute to strategic planning for network infrastructure.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for network engineers.
