Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
Junior UX/UI Designer
In this entry-level role, you will assist in creating user interfaces and conducting user research under the guidance of senior designers. You will learn to use design tools and contribute to team projects.
Mid-level UX/UI Designer
As a mid-level designer, you will take on more responsibility, leading projects and collaborating with cross-functional teams. You will be expected to manage your own design tasks and mentor junior designers.
Senior UX/UI Designer
In this peak career stage, you will lead design initiatives, set the design vision for projects, and influence product strategy. You will mentor junior staff and may also be involved in client presentations and stakeholder management.
Apprenticeships & Direct Entry
You can often bypass traditional university degrees by earning while you learn. The UK government heavily funds Degree-level and Advanced level Apprenticeships for ux/ui designers.
