BA Communication Design
About this course
Communication design is concerned with how visual and verbal language can be used to convey information, shape understanding, and influence behaviour. It is the discipline behind brand identities, information graphics, wayfinding systems, digital interfaces, editorial design, and the countless visual environments that structure modern life. Unlike graphic design in its narrowest sense, communication design keeps the focus firmly on purpose and audience, asking not just whether something looks good but whether it communicates effectively and whether it does so responsibly and inclusively. At Heriot-Watt University, the BA Communication Design runs over four years full-time and develops expertise across three interconnected dimensions of design practice: conceptual, applied, and entrepreneurial. You will learn to use design thinking as a tool for making sense of complex information and transforming it into visual experiences that are meaningful, accessible, and ethical. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study at a partner institution overseas and develop an international perspective on visual culture and professional practice. You will work across digital and physical media, develop skills in typography, visual systems, user experience, and visual storytelling, and engage with the social and ethical dimensions of design, including accessibility and sustainability. Heriot-Watt's location in Edinburgh, a city with a vibrant creative sector, enriches the programme with professional context. Graduates go on to careers in graphic design, brand consultancy, digital product design, user experience design, information design, publishing, motion graphics, and design education. The entrepreneurial dimension of the programme also prepares you for freelance work or studio ownership. Postgraduate study in communication design, visual communication, or design leadership is a further option.
