About this course
Education is one of the most studied and debated institutions in any society, shaping not only individual life chances but the values, capabilities, and social arrangements of entire communities. The academic study of education examines how learning happens, how schools and other educational institutions function, what policies are used to govern them, and what educational experience looks like from the perspectives of children, teachers, families, and communities. It draws on psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy, making it a richly interdisciplinary field. At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time BA Education degree combines academic study of education with engagement with professional practice, giving you a pathway that is grounded in both theory and the realities of educational settings. You will study child development and learning, educational policy and the politics of schooling, curriculum and pedagogy, inclusion and diversity, and the social contexts that shape educational experience and outcomes. The programme is designed to prepare you for a range of roles within and beyond formal schooling, and it provides a foundation for postgraduate professional study including teacher education programmes such as the PGCE. You will develop an informed and critical perspective on education, learning to evaluate research evidence, to understand policy in its historical and political context, and to think carefully about questions of equity and access that are central to educational debate. Working with educational organisations as part of the programme connects your academic learning to professional environments. Graduates pursue careers in teaching following postgraduate teacher training, as well as in educational administration, learning support, youth work, community education, educational research, charity and third sector organisations, and policy roles in government. The broad analytical skills the degree develops are also valued in many organisations beyond the education sector.
