BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine art at degree level is a sustained engagement with artistic practice as both a craft and a critical discipline. It invites you to develop your own creative voice and artistic practice through the skilful manipulation of materials, processes and ideas, while also developing the conceptual and critical frameworks to understand what you are doing and why. A fine art degree is not a training in a single medium but an education in how to think creatively, how to respond to the world through making, and how to situate your practice within the broader ecological, political, socioeconomic and philosophical contexts that shape contemporary art. At Birmingham City University, this three-year programme develops your identity as an artist through studio practice, critical study and creative experimentation. You will work across different media and approaches, developing both technical skills and conceptual depth, and building a body of work that demonstrates your range and your developing artistic perspective. A sandwich placement year provides professional experience in an arts context, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect your academic practice to the professional world of galleries, studios and arts organisations. Birmingham's thriving arts scene and BCU's connections to the regional and national creative sector give the programme a strong professional dimension. Fine art graduates work as artists, often combining studio practice with employment in art education, gallery and museum work, arts administration, community arts and creative industries. The critical and creative thinking skills developed through a fine art degree are also valued in advertising, design, film, fashion and digital media. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in fine art, curating, arts management or art education, and some go on to academic careers in art education and practice. The programme at Birmingham City University prepares you both for independent creative practice and for the range of roles in which creative thinking is a professional asset.
