About this course

Psychology and religion, theology, and spirituality is a combination that brings two quite different ways of understanding human experience into conversation. Psychology applies scientific methods to the study of perception, cognition, emotion, motivation, development, and behaviour, building an evidence-based account of how minds work. Religion, theology, and spirituality examine the beliefs, practices, and institutions through which human beings have sought meaning, connection, and transcendence across cultures and throughout history. Together they raise some of the most profound questions about human nature: how does belief affect behaviour, what psychological functions does ritual serve, how do spiritual experiences shape identity, and what can the study of religion teach us about human motivation and community? At Liverpool Hope this three-year full-time degree explores both disciplines with genuine intellectual seriousness. In psychology you will study the core areas of the discipline, including developmental, social, cognitive, and biological psychology, developing the research skills and scientific understanding that the field requires. In religion, theology, and spirituality you will engage with the major world faiths alongside contemporary spiritual identities that go beyond traditional institutional religion. Liverpool itself provides a rich context, with its two cathedrals, diverse faith communities, and long history of cultural and religious encounter. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all available within the programme, giving you the opportunity to develop professional skills and international experience alongside your academic work. Graduates move into careers in counselling and mental health, community development, chaplaincy, education, social work, journalism, public policy, and interfaith work. Many go on to postgraduate study in psychology, counselling, theology, or related fields. The combination also provides strong preparation for professional training in psychotherapy or counselling psychology.
