The role

You will be making espresso-based drinks, frothing milk, taking orders and payments, clearing tables and keeping the machine and counter spotless. It is busy and on-your-feet work, especially at the morning rush, and being friendly, quick and tidy under pressure is what makes a good barista.

Hours often include early starts, weekends and split shifts, and pay commonly starts around the minimum wage, sometimes topped up with tips. It can be tiring and repetitive, but many people enjoy the rhythm, the regulars and the team feel of a good cafe.

No qualifications are needed and most training happens on the job in your first few shifts. It is a common entry-level and student job, and experience can lead to supervisor or cafe-manager roles, or running your own place one day.
