Demolition Operatives safely take down old buildings and structures using heavy machinery and hand tools. They check buildings for dangers, plan how to knock them down safely, and recycle or dispose of the rubble.

The role
As a Demolition Operative, you use excavators, bulldozers and other heavy machinery to carefully take apart buildings and structures. Before you start, you look at the building to work out the safest way to knock it down, talking with engineers and site managers about any dangers - like asbestos or unstable walls - and how to handle them.
Your day involves operating heavy machinery, using hand tools for delicate work, and moving rubble and waste. You work closely with other people on site to stay safe, because demolition can be dangerous. You follow health and safety rules carefully, and you sort waste for recycling. As more companies care about the environment, demolition work now means saving useful materials instead of just throwing everything away.
Daily responsibilities
- Operate heavy machinery for demolition tasks, such as excavators and bulldozers.
- Conduct site assessments to determine the safest demolition methods.
- Remove hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Collaborate with engineers and site managers to plan and execute demolition projects.
- Sort and manage debris for recycling and waste disposal.
