AI helps here, but has not taken over
AI can already do some of this job, but the day-to-day work still leans on a person to decide, check and take responsibility. Nothing formally protects this job though, so the safest move is to keep building the judgement AI cannot yet copy.

The role

As a Design Consultancy Director, you will be at the helm of a dynamic design firm, steering creative initiatives that not only meet but exceed client expectations. Your role is pivotal in shaping the creative vision of the consultancy, ensuring that every project reflects the highest standards of innovation and design excellence. You will engage with a diverse range of clients, from startups to established corporations, helping them navigate the complexities of design in a rapidly evolving market.

  • Leadership and Mentorship: Your primary responsibility will be to lead and inspire a talented team of designers, strategists, and researchers. You will cultivate an environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and professional growth, ensuring that your team is equipped to tackle the most challenging design problems.
  • Strategic Planning: You will develop comprehensive design strategies that align with client objectives and market trends. This involves deep engagement with clients to understand their vision and translating that into actionable plans that deliver measurable results.
  • Client Engagement: Building strong relationships with clients is essential. You will regularly meet with clients to discuss their needs, present design concepts, and gather feedback. Your ability to communicate effectively and understand client aspirations will be key to your success.
  • Project Management: Overseeing the delivery of projects is a critical aspect of your role. You will ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This includes managing resources, timelines, and potential risks.
  • Market Insight: Staying ahead of industry trends is crucial. You will conduct thorough market research and competitor analysis to inform your design strategies, ensuring that your consultancy remains at the forefront of the design industry.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will work closely with marketing, technical, and operational teams to ensure that all aspects of a project are aligned. This collaboration is vital for delivering cohesive and effective design solutions.
  • Presentation and Communication: Presenting your design concepts to stakeholders will be a regular part of your role. You will articulate the vision and value of your designs, making a compelling case for their implementation.
  • Continuous Improvement: After project completion, you will evaluate outcomes and gather client feedback to refine processes and enhance future project delivery. Your commitment to excellence will drive the consultancy's reputation for quality and innovation.

In this role, you will face challenges that require not only a strong design acumen but also exceptional leadership and strategic thinking skills. The rewards, however, are immense: the satisfaction of seeing your team's creative visions come to life, the impact of your designs on clients' success, and the opportunity to shape the future of design consultancy in the UK and beyond.

AI EXPOSURE = the share of a job's day-to-day tasks AI can already do today, from the same exposure engine used across this site (Anthropic labour market research, 2026, observed real-world AI usage by occupation). Higher means more exposed. It is a measurement of now, not a prediction. THE DOOR = how hard the job is to get into, grade A (easy) to E (extremely hard), from each career's published forecast (OpenAI, "The AI Jobs Transition Framework", Richmond 2026, CC BY 4.0). A card marked MOAT NOT YET CLASSIFIED has a real exposure score but no entry yet in our moat register, so we make no claim about what structurally protects it. Scorecard grades and verdicts are Careermash editorial judgment: we show forecasts as forecasts and own our conclusions. Salary and pathway figures are each career's own published profile.
