The role
As a Procurement and Purchasing Manager or Director, you shop for things a company needs - but on a much bigger scale. You find suppliers, ask them for prices, work out what is best value, and sign contracts with them. You save money where you can, but you also make sure the quality is good and the supplier is reliable.
You spend time looking at what the business needs coming up, talking to other departments about their plans, and checking that suppliers are delivering what they promised. You also watch out for problems in the supply chain - if one supplier goes down, you need a backup plan. It is a mix of detective work, maths, and people skills.
Daily responsibilities
- Develop and implement procurement strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Negotiate contracts with suppliers to secure the best prices and terms.
- Analyze market trends and supplier performance to inform purchasing decisions.
- Collaborate with various departments to forecast demand and manage inventory levels.
- Conduct risk assessments to mitigate supply chain disruptions.
- Monitor and evaluate supplier performance through key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Lead cross-functional teams to optimize procurement processes and drive cost savings.
