The role

As a transportation engineer, you design and maintain the systems that move people around - roads, railways, bridges and bus networks. You work to make these systems safer, faster and better for the planet. Every road you help design or improve makes life easier for the people who use it.

Your work mixes office time with site visits. You'll use computer software to design new roads and transport systems, then go out to check the actual terrain and talk to communities about what they need. You might run tests to see if a new design will work, prepare detailed plans for builders to follow, or meet with councils and local groups to get their input on a new project. The job needs both creative problem-solving and careful attention to detail.

Daily responsibilities

  • Conduct feasibility studies for transportation projects, assessing technical, economic, and environmental impacts.
  • Design and analyze roadway and transit systems using advanced engineering software.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, stakeholders, and the public to gather input and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations effectively.
  • Monitor traffic patterns and conduct data analysis to inform future transportation planning.
  • Implement innovative technologies, such as smart traffic systems and sustainable transport options.
  • Manage project timelines and budgets, ensuring that all engineering standards are met.
  • Lead site inspections and assessments to ensure ongoing project compliance and safety.
