East Asian studies is the interdisciplinary examination of the cultures, histories, languages, economies, and politics of Northeast and Southeast Asia, a region that is home to some of the world's largest and fastest-growing economies and to cultural traditions of extraordinary depth and diversity. Understanding China, Japan, Korea, and the countries of Southeast Asia requires more than economic literacy: it requires engagement with history, with the literary and visual cultures that shape how people in these societies understand themselves, and with the political dynamics that make the region central to global affairs in the twenty-first century.
