English as a university discipline is far more than the close reading of novels and poems, though it includes that too. It is a study of how language shapes thought, how stories construct meaning, how literary and cultural texts reflect and challenge the societies that produce them, and how critical reading and careful writing can be developed into precision instruments for understanding the world. English encourages you to ask not just what a text says but how it says it, why it matters, and what it reveals about the historical, political, or cultural moment from which it came.
