About this course

Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the world's oceans, seas, and other saltwater environments. It encompasses the extraordinary diversity of marine organisms, from microscopic phytoplankton and bacteria through to fish, marine mammals, and the ecosystems they form, and examines how those organisms interact with one another and with their physical and chemical environment. Marine biologists study topics including coral reef ecology, the physiology of deep-sea creatures, the population dynamics of commercial fish stocks, and the effects of pollution and climate change on marine habitats. The discipline sits at the intersection of ecology, physiology, chemistry, and oceanography, and it is increasingly urgent given the pressures on marine ecosystems globally.
