The role

As a cardiologist, you're a doctor who specialises in treating heart and blood vessel problems. You see patients, examine them, order tests, and work out what's wrong with their heart. Then you treat them—sometimes with medicines, sometimes with procedures like fitting stents or doing angioplasties. You also explain to patients how to look after their heart better, like eating well or taking more exercise.

Heart disease is a big health problem in the UK and worldwide, and you help manage it. Some patients recover well, but you also care for people whose hearts are badly damaged and may not survive. This is part of the job, and it can be sad, but you know that your skill and care made a real difference in their lives. Most cardiologists feel their work is very worthwhile because you literally save and extend people's lives.

Daily responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough physical examinations and medical histories of patients.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as ECGs, echocardiograms, and stress tests.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Perform invasive procedures like catheterizations and angioplasties when necessary.
  • Educate patients about lifestyle changes and preventive measures for heart health.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Stay updated with the latest research and advancements in cardiology.
  • Participate in on-call duties and emergency care for acute cardiac events.
